New London artist and long time friend of Hygienic Art Mark Patnode will be signing posters featuring his painting of the Charter Oak in celebration of Connecticut's 375th anniversary. Posters were generously donated by Barker Specialty (http://www.barkerspecialty.com) and all proceeds from their sale on this day will go to benefit Hygienic Art.
Posters can be purchased for a donation of at least $15.
“The Charter Oak embodies the spirit of Connecticut – strong,
resilient and deeply rooted in heritage. Mark Patnode’s talent and generosity add another important chapter to the story of the Charter Oak and our state, one that will continue to be told for generations.”
The Charter Oak legend was born in 1687 when King James II of England sent his agents to take back a charter from colonists who had been granted freedoms 25 years earlier from King Charles. The colonists safely hid the document in a great white oak tree near the banks of the Connecticut River in Hartford. “The invitation by Governor Rell and CCT to create a composition of a tree that no longer exists was a great challenge,” Patnode said. “This experience has been one of the most enjoyable and absorbing commissions I have had the pleasure of executing. My hope is that this painting will encourage viewers to reflect on history and hope.”
Mark Patnode is a Fellow of the Urban Artists Initiative, which is funded by CCT and the National Endowment for the Arts. His work has been featured in numerous galleries and museums throughout Connecticut and is part of the collection of former President and Mrs. George W. Bush and Presidente Pedro Verona Pires of Cape Verde, Africa. More information about artist Mark Patnode can be found at www.marketheartist.com.
