Poetry of the Wild (PoW) is a participatory environmental art project connecting people to landscape throughout New London County by combining poetry, visual art, and nature observation.
The PoW project was designed by Ana Flores, an ecological designer and sculptor who has toured nationally with this unique project and is a collaboration of the Mystic Arts Center, The Alexey von Schlippe Gallery of Art at UConn Avery Point and Expressiones Cultural Center in New London.
The PoW celebration will begin at New London Public Library on Saturday the 28th, at 3pm, with a walk following, led by Ana Flores to the different locations of the boxes and end with a reception at Expressiones.
PoW features handmade "poetry boxes" fabricated out of recycled materials that are designed to reflect the chosen texts within them. Boxes are constructed by poets, artists, students and community members in each locale. Inside each box resides a poem and a journal for the public to record responses to the work and the site.
This year, PoW will exhibit in New London with an opening reception at Expressiones Cultural Center. The project will launch with two additional partners, Mitchell College, and the New London Public Library. The New London Public Library will also host an audio phone tour that will be a special feature of the New London series.
PoW culminates in two final showings in 2013 on the Sculpture Path at UConn Avery Point in Groton and again at the Mystic Arts Center in Mystic during its centennial celebration.
Poetry of the Wild is made possible by a Strategic Initiative Grant from the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism.
