Banners & Cranks presents The Singing Picture Show, a cabaret packed to the rafters with cantastoria performances by 10 acts from across the country, July 22nd at 7:00pm at The Hygienic Art Park in New London. The Singing Picture Show brings together live music and art in the form of hand-cranked "moving pictures," illustrated stories on painted canvases performed by jazz singers and circus freaks, and all sorts of unusual live entertainments.
Performing each night will be The Dolly Wagglers combining polkas and barnstompers with tales of pre-post-consumer society; New York's very own Great Small Works and Circus Amok's fabulous Jennifer Miller; from Philadelphia, Ramshackle Enterprises featuring the manic work of Beth Nixon; Chicago's Meredith Miller presenting six pieces that exploit "the disturbing subtexts in jazz standards" and Theater Oobleck with new selections from its 7-year project Baudelaire in a Box; Vermont's Clare Dolan premiering a brand new cantastoria and Meredith Holch with a gripping piece of labor history in sassy rhyming couplets; plus much more...Each night will feature music including the B&C All-Star Orkestar.
Banners & Cranks is a nomadic festival of cantastoria dedicated to promoting new cantastoria and cranky works by artists, musicians, puppeteers, carpenters and carnies. In 2010, we held our first festival in Chicago's Links Hall and also curated an exhibition of cantastoria art at the Packer-Schorr Gallery. In 2011, we brought our festival to the HERE Arts Center in Manhattan and to the Brooklyn Bridge Park. Banners & Cranks is co-founded and co-wrangled by Clare Dolan and Dave Buchen. The Singing Picture Show is funded in part by Ibex Puppetry through it's Puppet Slam Network.
