even though El-P's line on Indelible MC's/ Company Flow's 'The Fire In Which You Burn', "even when i say nothing it's a beautiful use of negative space" has always been one of my all-time favorite rap lyrics and stays jammed in my psyche somewhere, i have always had trouble leaving any negative space in my art in my most serious era/ movement of making art (starting about 2006 or '07) though i love it in plenty of others' art. my friend rebecca scottie's incredibly unique style frequently involves tons of negative white space and i always admired her sense of patience/ control to allow that in her work, if that makes any sense. even in my blackbooks/ sketchbooks i rarely leave negative space for the past couple of years. so anyway, on this most recent piece on a 3/4" cradled 11"x14" clayboard, i decided to do just that. and it felt real great.
the title is taken from the incredibly talented homie Moe Pope's mixtape Stampeding Elephants (download that !!!); peep his music and art if you haven't. piece also inspired by tha god Bigg Jus' "Empire is a Bitch (Fake Arab Spring Mix)" off his new masterpiece 'Machines That Make Civilization Fun" cop that if you don't fear dark abstraction in your hip hop...
